Mai-Treffen / May Meeting ..... Cityscape / Architecture (1)

Lots of discussion about modern vs. art quilts again! At the previous meeting we had agreed on cityscape / architecture as the challenge topic. The results - from drawings to ready-quilted tops - were wonderful ... and so varied! Some members also showed earlier works that fit with the theme.

We're starting with Katrin's two quilts. Lots more to follow in the next posts ...

Satellite City Map by Katrin Möller

Satellite City Map (Detail)

Made up of squares in 3 sizes; the length of the sides is in a ratio of 1:2:3; the layout was inspired by Kaffe Fassett. Katrin used fabrics with a graphic design. She wanted to see what arrangement worked best with this kind of fabric: distributing them evenly or grouping them into definite blocks. The solution was somewhere inbetween the two. The idea for the quilt came from a satellite image of an urban development.

Nude by Katrin Möller

Nude (Detail)

Nude: Quilt-as-you-go-Technik und Aufteilung inspiriert von Yoshiko Jinzenji (Quilt Artistry: Inspired Designs from the East).

Quilt-as-you-go technique. Arrangement inspired by Yoshiko Jinzenji (Quilt Artistry: Inspired Designs from the East). Katrin's idea was to have a minimalistic colourway and large areas of negative space. She used the quilting to emphasize the structure and experimented with the effects produced by small variations in the otherwise simple lines of quilting.

  1. Both of Katrin's quilts are so insteresting! What a neat idea to use satellite imagery for quilt inspiration!

  2. Wonderful translation from the subject onto the quilts. I love the satellite imagery also. The nude piece is so interesting. Well done!
