May Meeting - Bauhaus (5)

Helga: The inspiration for these quilts came from the works of Anni Albers, who was an active member of the Bauhaus School of Design in Dessau together with her husband Josef. While his specialities were architecture and art, Anni's focus was textile design, weaving and wallhangings. What appeals to me most about her work is the simple shapes and subdued colours.

May Meeting - Bauhaus (4)

Ilse: Google originally "told" me that Piet Mondrian was a Bauhaus artist, but some additional research I did later on revealed that to be wrong. Mondrian's style is referred to in the art world as neoplasticism. His only connection with Bauhaus is an essay entitled Le Néo-Plasticisme, which was published in German in 1925 as Bauhausbuch Nr. 5 under the title Neue Gestaltung.

All the same, I have always liked Piet Mondrian's post-1920 works and as I associated them with Bauhaus, I chose them as inspiration for this quilt. And with the Soccer World Cup being omnipresent at the moment, I subconsciously chose the colors black, red and yellow - It was only later that I realized that these were the colors of the German national flag ... So I thought "why not create a soccer ball to go with it as well?", removable of course, and to be added only every 2 years ....

May Meeting - Bauhaus (3)

Uschi: All the Bauhaus quilts I showed are ones I made some time ago (I can’t remember exactly when anymore).

Uschi: The inspiration for this quilt came from a book by Gunta Stölzl, who was the only woman to be appointed a Bauhaus master (of the weaving workshop). Her design for a woven rug appeared very simple at first glance. When interpreting the design in fabric I began by sewing two different strip sets. Using the picture of the rug as a guide, I then cut them vertically into strips of different widths and sewed them together again. After that I then cut the piece horizontally in three places and inserted strips of different widths.

The colour distribution and the cut-and-sew method of construction give the quilt interesting depth. And the up-and-down design gives the quilt movement whilst still retaining clear and crisp lines.

Uschi: This is a small quilt I made in response to a challenge with the theme of circle, line, space. These shapes feature prominently in pictures by Kandinsky. The choice of colours is also reminiscent of Kandinsky. All the circles and strips are appliquéd.

Uschi: Not quite Klee, but not quite Kandinsky either.

Uschi: The quilting on the big quilt with the pots of "pixelated" paint (pixels were the topic in January) is now complete, and the quilt is hanging on the wall. (The quilt measures 2 x 1 m, the photograph shows part of it.)

May Meeting - Bauhaus (2)

Susy: When I started doing some research on the Internet into the topic of Bauhaus, I kept coming up with pictures of Bauhaus-style buildings, but I knew didn’t want to “build” houses from fabric. After some time I came across pictures of some of Paul Klee’s works, which really appealed to me straight away. I decided to make a quilt with bright colours. As I was working on my quilt I discovered that I was using some forms that echoed elements of the Bauhaus buildings I’d seen on the Internet, such as the rounded roofs of factory buildings.

May Meeting - Bauhaus

Katrin: I was inspired to create this quilt following a visit to the Bosna Quilts Workshop in Bregenz in Austria (http://www.bosnaquilt.at/; http://www.pinterest.com/quiltingtattie/bosna-quilts/). The idea for the hand-quilting, with irregular square spirals, comes from a modern printed fabric. For the blue strips I overdyed some blue and purple peppered cottons dark blue to make them a similar in terms of colour and brightness.

Katrin: After having spent a lot of time on the Internet researching Bauhaus art, I decided on the green rectangle in a square frame of two tones of blue. Again, I enjoyed the “meditative” process of hand quilting – this time with an Amish-inspired fan design.

Katrin: And at the same time I also made this baby quilt for my new nephew. Rather than hand quilting, I decided to machine quilt this one because of the thick batting.

Rike: My first block is the result of a colour study class I did with Uschi Schwanitz (Nadel und Faden shop) and demonstrates the colour-in-itself contrast according to Johannes Itten, a member of the Bauhaus movement. I found this more by chance, really, but it reminded me straight away of the Bauhaus motto.

Rike: The block I made for our Bauhaus challenge is a combination of Mondrian and the Mod Mosaic pattern by Elizabeth Harman (http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/01/mod-mosaic-tutorials.html). Instead of Mondrian’s austere straight lines I used sloping, black lines to “soften” the overall impression a little.

Doodling.

Rike: This is a modern quilt I made for my best girlfriend using a Moda "Juggling Summer" charm pack and some Stof fabrics. I’m using different quilting designs inspired by Zentangle/doodling.

Rike: I made the large quilt in response to last year’s annual challenge in the Cannstatter Stichlinge quilt group. It was quilted by Saskia Niemann (http://blog.niemanns-land.de) and measures 2.10m x 2.40m.
