May Meeting - Bauhaus

Katrin: Inspiriert von den Bosna Quilts entstand dieses Exemplar (http://www.bosnaquilt.at/; http://www.pinterest.com/quiltingtattie/bosna-quilts/). Die Idee zu den handgequilteten Linien, die spiralig-rechteckig in unterschiedlichen Abständen angeordnet sind, stammt von einem modernen Druckstoff. Für die blauen Streifen habe ich ein paar blaue und lila peppered cottons marineblau überfärbt, um sie farblich und in der Helligkeit anzunähern.

Katrin: I was inspired to create this quilt following a visit to the Bosna Quilts Workshop in Bregenz in Austria (http://www.bosnaquilt.at/; http://www.pinterest.com/quiltingtattie/bosna-quilts/). The idea for the hand-quilting, with irregular square spirals, comes from a modern printed fabric. For the blue strips I overdyed some blue and purple peppered cottons dark blue to make them a similar in terms of colour and brightness. 

Katrin: Nach langem Surfen im Internet zu Bildern von Bauhauskünstlern entstand die Idee vom gerahmten grünen Rechteck im 2-farbigen blauen Quadrat. Wieder genieße ich das meditative Handquilten - diesmal in Amish-artigen Fächermotiven.

Katrin: After having spent a lot of time on the Internet researching Bauhaus art, I decided on the green rectangle in a square frame of two tones of blue. Again, I enjoyed the “meditative” process of hand quilting – this time with an Amish-inspired fan design.

Katrin: Und nebenher musste noch ein moderner Babyquilt für meinen neuen Neffen entstehen – wegen des dicken Vlieses aber maschinengequiltet.

Katrin: And at the same time I also made this baby quilt for my new nephew. Rather than hand quilting, I decided to machine quilt this one because of the thick batting.

Rike: Mein erster Block ist ein Ergebnis vom Farbstudien-Kurs bei Uschi und zeigt den Farbe-An-Sich-Kontrast nach Itten, der ja auch zur Bauhaus-Epoche zählt. Es ist eigentlich eher Zufall gewesen, aber es hat mich sofort an das Bauhaus-Motto erinnert.

Rike: My first block is the result of a colour study class I did with Uschi Schwanitz (Nadel und Faden shop) and demonstrates the colour-in-itself contrast according to Johannes Itten, a member of the Bauhaus movement. I found this more by chance, really, but it reminded me straight away of the Bauhaus motto.

Rike: Mein eigentlicher Bauhaus-Block ist eine Kombination aus den Kunstwerken von Mondrian und dem Mod Mosaic Quilt von Elisabeth Hartman (http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/01/mod-mosaic-tutorials.html). Ich wollte die Strenge von Mondrian durch die schiefen, schwarzen Streifen etwas auflockern.
 
Rike: The block I made for our Bauhaus challenge is a combination of Mondrian and the Mod Mosaic pattern by Elizabeth Harman (http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/01/mod-mosaic-tutorials.html). Instead of Mondrian’s austere straight lines I used sloping, black lines to “soften” the overall impression a little. 

Rike: Der kleine moderne Quilt ist aus einem Charm-Pack von Moda "Juggling Summer" und Stof-Stoffen entstanden und für meine beste Freundin gedacht. Das Quilting soll aus mehreren verschiedenen Mustern bestehen à la Zentangle bzw. Doodling.

Rike: This is a modern quilt I made for my best girlfriend using a Moda "Juggling Summer" charm pack and some Stof fabrics. I’m using different quilting designs inspired by Zentangle/doodling.

Rike: Der große Quilt ist die Jahresaufgabe der Cannstatter Stichlinge vom vergangenen Jahr. Er wurde von Saskia Niemann (http://blog.niemanns-land.de) gequiltet und ist 2,10m x 2,40m groß.

Rike: I made the large quilt in response to last year’s annual challenge in the Cannstatter Stichlinge quilt group. It was quilted by Saskia Niemann (http://blog.niemanns-land.de) and measures 2.10m x 2.40m.
